Fuji has just unleashed the Fujifilm GFX 100 – a 100MP medium format mirrorless monster with 5-axis in-body image stabilization and crazy reliable autofocus.

Just how good IS this camera? How does it stack up against the Phase One IQ4, the Hasselblad X1D II 50C, and the Fuji GFX 50R and 50S? Pretty bloody well, I’d say.

  1. Good review. I'm definitely excited by all the tech going into medium format. Hope those larger sensors from phaseone trickle down, soon.

    Except for this:

"Medium format used to mean being nailed down to a tripod"

Yeah, besides Kodak Brownies, Holga, various rangefinding medium formats, and more. Plus all those rangefinders can shoot on the street just fine.

  2. The Fuji does offer some cool features. But when I look at the images, I still felt the Hassy X1D II has a nicer look to me. 100MP is awesome. But I'd trade that for 50MP and nicer image quality. The Fuji images looked a bit flat to me. Probably due to the lenses. They definitely went the economy route there going with focal-plane shutter instead of leaf as in the Hassy. I understand the tradeoff.

    Excellent work!

  3. Fantastic camera and I want one! But why such a super utilitarian design? I think 50% of the buyers will be rich non pro´s and a little soul alá Hasselblad would be great.. ( Maybe I can pimp mine a little with some snake skinn on the grip 🙂 Thanks for a great review!

  4. If I heard correctly you said "ten thousand pound price tag". That would be $12,501. I ordered mine June 18 from an American store for $10,000 (minus five cents, I think it was). Hasn't been delivered, but credit card not charged. So you really pay a mark-up of 25% to get it in England? I recall when Brits would fly to the US to pick up cameras because the trip would in effect be free (don't know if they had to fool UK Customs).

  5. amazing work on your GFX promotion Lol makes me wanna buy it like a thousand time more. I was also thinking of getting the IQ4.. but this one's definitely better in terms of versatility

  6. They need to get the medium format digital sensor sizes up to at least 6×4.5…. the difference is just way too marginal. And the 100mp is nothing compared to drumscans if you do prints. You still end up upscaling for even moderate sized prints.
Its a start, but just needs much bigger sensors to be interesting.

  7. Great camera, great review, but watching you I got the same nervous vibes I get when one of my children walk too close to a cliff edge – that gem of a camera and you're holding it one handed with no wrist strap. That's just naughty. 🙂

  8. The physically smallest medium format available.
100mb sensor is far from the most pixels
Still a nice camera. still no tilt shift for product photogs.
A removable back would be nice.
This camera would be great for landscapes…

  9. 11:11 hey man… it is not really accurate to say you cannot afford one. we all have body parts, assets, and stuff we can sell just so we can buy one. The big concern isn't affording it, it is the price that we have to pay to afford it, and how will we deal with the disappointment when a 150MP version comes along with better IBIS sometime in 2026… 😀

  10. Thanks for the video. How about lenses for the particular camera.? I will most likely never get this one as I am heavily invested in Hasselblad and Sony.

  11. AF speed of GFX50 was literally as fast as AF of X-PRO1, meaning "yes, there is AF… sort of … but, you may forget about dynamic scenes"! How come Fuji has gine a speed of AF in GFX-100 to the one that matches AF of XT3????

  12. Incredible review – maybe even better than the camera which I am now seriously considering. How is the AF and eye detect compared to the more recent Sony cameras? I have the A7RIII, A7III, and 6400 – and on all three it is fantastic.
